This might end up being my favorite blog prompt for 2011. I know it's early in the year, but "smile sightings" is something that has keep me somewhat stable for many years.
My sister first introduced me to this concept. As you go about your day you must pay attention to the little things that bring a smile to your face. These little things are what make unbearable days, bearable. These little things that make you smile are the things of life that far to many of us miss - and many days I do miss them.
I start each of my staff meetings with Smile Sightings. Some days we all struggle to remember one from the past week. The two parents in the room find it easy to use things our kids did this past week to fulfill the Smile Sighting request. Many times I highlight silly things that I've done myself in the past week. If we paid attention to only ourselves, we would have many Smile Sightings each day!!
So, let me fulfill the #postaday2011 request...
Something that always brings a smile to my face is when I notice someone - anyone - stepping outside of the prescribed gender norm and doing something unexpected. For example, I was driving along one of the busier streets in Ames, IA (really there aren't any busy streets) and there was road construction workers on the opposite side of the street from where I was driving. Three men were working in the area and one was operating the jack hammer to break up the asphalt. He had stopped the machine and was stretching his neck from left to right, back to front, and lifting his shoulders up and down. His co-worker, another man, stepped behind him and started rubbing his neck and shoulders. The man on the jack hammer's body instantly expressed relief. It made me smile.
I love the Smile Sighting exercise so much that I started a Facebook page called "Smile Sightings" - join and add your thoughts! Bring a smile to your face and to others. Really we can all find something each day to smile about.

My two cents on the world, people, perspectives, interactions, injustice, and social justice. I'm working through my questions and curiosities of where we are and how we might get out of this mucky mess and achieve a glowing, loving, peaceful community. My Two Cents welcomes your two cents as we collectively reach for interconnection.
